What Is Sedation Dentistry?

1

Approximately 50% of Americans feel some level of anxiety about dental treatment. For many people, this fear can prevent them from receiving much needed care, even if they suffer daily from oral discomfort. To help combat dental anxiety, we can utilize sedation dentistry techniques to create a more relaxed and tranquil experience for our patients.

Though the cause of dental anxiety may be different for each patient, whether from a fear of needles to gum sensitivity, the effects can be equally harmful. Oral health problems can become more complicated and costly to repair when left untreated. On the other hand, if you desire to rejuvenate the appearance of your teeth with a cosmetic treatment such as porcelain veneers, dental anxiety may be preventing you from achieving a more beautiful smile.

At Aesthetic Smiles of New Jersey, we offer two main methods of sedation. IV sedation is administered by our board-certified anesthesiologist. This technique can be adjusted and customized for your comfort level throughout every step of your procedure. With IV sedation, you may feel as if you are sleeping during treatment.

The other advanced technique we offer is called oral conscious sedation. This option involves a small pill taken about an hour before your procedure. Oral conscious sedation is designed to place you into such a state of extreme relaxation that many patients do not remember the details of their procedure after completion. With that in mind, it does not render you fully unconscious and you will be able to communicate with our dental team throughout the treatment. You will also be closely monitored during the procedure to ensure everything is running smoothly.

With sedation dentistry, you can take the fear and anxiety out of going to the dentist. Our options can make your visit with us much more comfortable – and even pleasant!
